Websites have come a long way. A few years ago, having a site that worked on mobile was a bonus. Now it’s the bare minimum. So what’s next?
Here are six trends we think small businesses should be aware of. Not all of them need action today – but it’s good to know where things are heading.
1. AI everywhere
AI is changing how people find businesses and how websites are built and run. Expect more AI-powered search answers, chat assistants on websites and tools that help write, translate and personalise content. The businesses that benefit will be the ones with clear, trustworthy information for AI to draw on. We’ve written more about AI search and your website.
2. Speed as standard
People’s patience isn’t getting any longer. Fast, lightweight websites will keep pulling ahead of slow, bloated ones – in search results and in sales. Read our guide to why page speed matters.
3. Accessibility becomes expected
Customers, and increasingly the law, expect websites to work for everyone. Accessible design is fast becoming a sign of a quality business. Here’s our guide to making your website accessible.
4. Privacy-first marketing
People care more about how their data is used, and browsers are cutting back on tracking. Expect less reliance on third-party cookies and more focus on email lists, genuine relationships and data customers are happy to share.
5. More personal experiences
Websites will get better at showing the right thing to the right person – like highlighting local services based on location, or remembering what a returning customer was interested in. Done well, it feels helpful rather than creepy.
6. Real people, real content
As AI-generated content floods the internet, genuinely human content will stand out. Real photos of your team, honest reviews, case studies and your own voice will matter more than ever.
What should you do now?
Don’t panic, and don’t chase every shiny new thing. Focus on the basics: a fast, secure, accessible website with clear information and real proof that you’re great at what you do. That’s a solid foundation for whatever comes next.
If your website is starting to feel a bit dated, let’s have a chat about where it could go next.
