How to plan your first exhibition stand (without the stress)

by | Oct 12, 2026 | Best practice

Your first exhibition can feel like a big job. There’s the space, the design, the printing, the travelling and the people you want to impress.

The good news is that a great stand doesn’t have to be complicated. Here’s how we’d go about it, one step at a time.

1. Find out about your space

Check how much room you’ve been given and where it sits in the hall. A corner, an end or a spot in the middle all change how people see you.

Have the measurements to hand before you design anything. It saves a lot of changes later.

2. Decide what you want people to do

Do you want them to pick up a leaflet, book a meeting or sign up for something? Choose one main thing, and make sure everything on your stand points towards it.

3. Keep your message short

People walk past quickly. Your logo, one clear line about what you do and one strong image will do more than a wall of text. If it can’t be read from a few metres away, trim it.

4. Think about how it goes up

Some stands need tools and a team to build them. Others are much simpler. Our new modular floor displays slot together without any tools, in the box combination that suits your space, so you can build them yourself on the day.

Whatever you choose, ask yourself: can I put it up on my own, and will it pack away just as easily?

5. Build around one strong backdrop

A big printed backdrop sets the tone for your whole stand. A fabric backdrop or a modular display gives you one seamless picture, in full colour.

Then add a few extras that match:

When everything looks like it belongs together, your stand looks confident.

6. Order in good time

Allow time to design, print and check your artwork. A rushed job is a stressful one. Send us your show date and we’ll work backwards from it. Our file supply guide explains what we need from you.

7. Don’t forget the small things

Pack spare leaflets, business cards, a few cable ties and a roll of tape. They’ll save you at some point.

First exhibition stand FAQs

Do I need to buy a big stand for my first show?

No. Start with what fits your space and your budget. A roller banner and a tablecloth is a simple start, and you can add a backdrop or a modular display later.

Can you design the graphics too?

Yes. Our graphic design team designs exhibition graphics all the time. Send us your logo and a few words about your business, and we’ll send you a proof to check before anything is printed.

Can I see the kit before I order?

Yes. Pop in by appointment at our studio on Blake Street, or give us a call on 01904 501 524.
